A Future in Speech Pathology: Westmoreland Student’s Transfer Journey
March 12, 2025When Hannah Townsend of Mount Pleasant graduated from high school, she wasn’t sure of what her future plans would be and decided to start at Westmoreland.
“While I didn’t know what career I wanted to pursue, I was certain that I wanted to begin college,” Townsend said. “I wanted to earn credits that would benefit me in the future when I finally determined an area of study.”
She knew early on that she aspired to help and assist those who may struggle communicating with others in expressing their own thoughts and feelings. She felt it was a natural fit to pursue a career in speech pathology.
“A career in speech pathology will allow me to make a difference in the lives of others, and that is exactly what I am determined to accomplish,” she said. “Plus, I’ll have the privilege of watching their overall lifestyle improve as they become a healthier and stronger version of themselves.”
To achieve her dream, Townsend plans to pursue a degree in speech pathology at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP).
“I chose to transfer to IUP because they not only offer a bachelor’s degree in speech/language pathology, but also have an astounding master’s program,” Townsend said. “I seek to earn my entire degree at their university and they make it very achievable.”
Townsend said that in every presentation she’s attended that it’s evident that the dreams and aspirations of the student are always put first.
“IUP is also near my home, but allows me to have some distance,” she said. “I have a greater sense of independence while also being able to come home and can visit when I please.”
She states that her time at Westmoreland has allowed her to gain a new insight and understanding of learning because a college atmosphere is unique, where new expectations arise. Her journey at Westmoreland allowed her to not only prepare herself for future studies and adjusting to a college and work-life balance, but has also encouraged her to thrive socially.
“My first meeting with Maria Loffredo (transfer counselor) was to discuss my future plans of transferring to IUP,” said Townsend. “Prior to our meeting, I had already completed a vast amount of research about the program. When I arrived at our meeting, we were able to focus directly on the courses that I should complete at Westmoreland in order to be on the right track for IUP.”
Loffredo also supplied her with resources to transfer counselors at IUP so she was able to get in contact with those individuals and their Admissions program. Being accepted as a transfer student to IUP so early in the semester was a little bit of a challenge, but without the resources that Loffredo provided, she would not have had an easy time making those connections.
Townsend believes it’s important to stay determined, while also seeking to improve oneself.
“I feel that you should never limit yourself. Pursue your passion, stay focused and continue to value the opportunities that come your way,” she concluded. “I feel academically confident for my future, while also expectant for the new memories that are ahead.”
