February 6, 2025

Westmoreland County Community College named Dr. David H. Devier of Ada, Ohio as Interim President effective January 27, 2025.

Devier’s journey in higher education is an inspiring testament to his determination and resilience. Coming from a blue-collar family in rural northwest Ohio, he followed a transformative path to college earning a doctor of philosophy degree from Ohio State University, a master of arts degree from Kent State University and a bachelor of arts degree from Ohio Northern University.

As he neared retirement in his forty-eighth year, Devier reflected on his remarkable career, shaped by mentorship, dedication and a profound impact on the educational landscape. A dynamic educational leader and community advocate, he is a multifaceted leader who advocates and facilitates in both educational and community spheres. As a servant leader, he supports employees in their goals and has always been dedicated to student success. Devier embraces his diverse responsibilities, such as being a cheerleader, early adopter, communications promoter, community engager, and government connector at state and national levels.

He has contributed to the growth and development of educational institutions throughout his career and has been involved in constructing new facilities and renovating existing ones, showing his commitment to providing advanced learning environments.

His impact also lies in his efforts to boost enrollment at every institution he has served. He has increased student numbers through strategic initiatives, such as diversified programming, flexible modalities and dual enrollment opportunities.

He brings to Westmoreland a wealth of experience having served as president and CEO of Glen Oaks Community College in Michigan for 10 years, vice president of academic affairs and student services at Clark State College in Ohio and dean positions at several community colleges in Ohio. In addition, he has numerous years of teaching experience prior to and throughout to obtaining his administrative positions.

“We are very pleased that Dr. Devier has joined Westmoreland as we continue to search for our new president,” said Bridget Johnston, chair of Westmoreland’s Board of Trustees. “We are confident that he will bring his expertise to Westmoreland during this time of transition.”

Devier balances his professional and personal life well, drawing on his hobbies and interests. As a former industrial art teacher and professor, he enjoys auto restoration, woodworking, home renovation and memorabilia collecting for Ada, Ohio.

These hobbies not only serve as an outlet for creativity but also contribute to a fulfilling and balanced personal life. His hands-on approach to leisure contrasts with his academic and administrative responsibilities. These pursuits give him a sense of accomplishment and enjoyment, fostering a well-rounded lifestyle.

“I am excited to take on this interim role and help Westmoreland move forward during this time,” said Devier. “I have been committed to higher education throughout my adulthood and will wholeheartedly bring all of my experience to Westmoreland to help move forward. I believe Westmoreland offers so much to the community and I am proud to have the opportunity to serve the counties of Westmoreland, Indiana and Fayette through the college.”
