STEM Summer Camps Spark Curiosity and Confidence at Westmoreland’s ATC

July 15, 2025

This summer, the Advanced Technology Center (ATC) at Westmoreland County Community College was proud to offer a variety of STEM-focused camps for school-aged youth, made possible through funding from the college’s Build Back Better Robotics grant. Among the standout offerings were the Tech Math Jumpstart and Snap Circuits® Coding Camp—two dynamic, hands-on experiences that gave students a deeper understanding of technology and engineering principles while building confidence in math and problem-solving.

In Tech Math Jumpstart, students explored connections between robotics and machining, all while sharpening their skills in algebra, geometry and trigonometry. The program blended academic enrichment with practical application, helping students build a strong foundation for future STEM learning.

The Snap Circuits® Coding Camp introduced participants to the fundamentals of electronics and computer programming through a weeklong, interactive curriculum. Students constructed working circuits, explored series and parallel resistors, and gained foundational knowledge in Python, ASCII, and binary code. The camp concluded with a rewarding final project: designing and building a fully functional FM radio.

“These camps are about more than just technology—they’re about empowering young learners with the confidence to explore and create,” said Joanna Markle, director of Grant Activities. “Thanks to the Build Back Better grant, we’re able to offer transformative learning experiences that open doors to exciting futures in STEM.”

Instruction was provided by Bernadette Trainer, adjunct professor, Mathematics/Physics/Computer Science; Christie Sever, assistant professor, Computer Technology; and Michael Caglia, associate professor, Computer Technology. Support throughout the camps was coordinated by Kathi Traynor, division technician; Jodi Weister, division clerk; Becky Parker, director/ATC; and Joanna Markle, director, Grant Activities.

These summer camps represent Westmoreland County Community College’s continued commitment to inspiring the next generation of STEM innovators across Westmoreland County.
