The CCC Staff Can Help You:

Meet with a member of the CCC team to discuss your major/career interests

Questions to Consider

  • What kinds of things do you enjoy doing so much that you would want to do them every day?
  • What are your strongest skills?
  • What are your hobbies/interests?
  • What did you like (or dislike) about past jobs or volunteer experiences?
  • What do you think you would like about being a__________ or majoring in__________?
  • What is important to you in a career (i.e. helping others, making lots of money, having creative freedom, being in a position of influence)?
  • If there are certain careers you would not like, what is it about those careers that you think you would dislike?

Action Steps 

  • Participate in CCC workshops and activities
  • To help you find your fit, we offer Focus2 and YouScience, as free resources for Westmoreland students 
    • Contact the CCC for more information
  • Get involved on campus
    • Student organizations and activities offer you the opportunity to further explore your interests

Participate in CCC and employer events to research careers and talk to people in your field of interest

  • What would you like to learn about the career(s) you are considering?

  • Research the career(s) that interest you
    • The CCC provides reliable sources of career information to assist you with your research
  • Talk with or observe someone who is working in your field of interest
    • Share your interest in talking or observing someone in your field with a member of the CCC team

Work with the CCC to identify work-based learning opportunities such as internships and practicums to develop the skills you need to succeed and confirm your choice of career

Have you had an opportunity to gain experience in the career field(s) that interests you?

Have you submitted an application to complete an internship/practicum or other work-based learning experience? 

What networking opportunities are you participating in?

Action Steps

  • Test-drive career opportunities and gain career-related experience through internships, practicums, career-related part-time jobs, on-campus involvement or volunteer work
    • Contact the CCC if interested in a work-based learning opportunities
    • Research potential employers by gathering information from their websites
    • Visit Purple Briefcase to upload your resume and search the postings for job and internship positions
  • Get involved. Take on leadership positions in student organizations and volunteer groups that can help you to develop your skills and interests
  • Attend workshops and participate in CCC events
  • Participate in a mock interview with the CCC or an employer in your field

Prepare for your job search by meeting with a member of the CCC to discuss job search strategies, have your resume reviewed, and practice interviewing

  • What skills and experiences are most important to highlight on your resume and at networking events?

Action Steps 

  • Conduct an active job search
    • Develop an employer prospect list with contact names and email addresses and reach out
    • Upcoming or recent graduates, contact Mary Saula to learn more about 3 Cups of Coffee GRAD, a free mentoring program that matches you with a professional in your field to support you in your job search. You’ll work together to strengthen interview and job search skills and create a customized career plan while building local professional connections.   • Create a professional email address and build your LinkedIn profile
  • Meet with a member of the CCC team to discuss your job search strategy and to fine-tune your resume, cover letter, portfolio and interviewing skills
  • Visit Purple Briefcase to update your resume and search job postings
  • Participate in employer information sessions and other networking events on- and off-campus
  • Gather information on realistic salary expectations
  • Participate in job-search workshops and seminars
  • Ask former and current employers to serve as references
  • Follow up on all job applications and keep a record of the status of each
  • Evaluate job offers and accept one
  • Report job offers and acceptances to the CCC
