We the People: The 500-Year Battle over Who is American

Online/Remote

Featuring guest speaker Dr. Ben Railton. The debates and conflicts that comprise so much of America in early 2021 are not simply about political battles. They are also extensions and amplifications of founding, longstanding, and ongoing American arguments. In this talk based on his 2019 book of the same name, Dr. Ben Railton, Fitchburg State University, will trace one such defining argument: over how we define not just America, but also and especially who is part of this identity and community. This battle between exclusionary and inclusive visions has shaped every American era, and will continue to shape our collective conversations in this new year.

Four random student participants will receive copies of Dr. Railton's books "We the People: The 500-Year Battle over Who is American" or "Of Thee I Sing The Contested History of American Patriotism."
